Shane Varcoe

About Shane

One ordinary shift. One forklift. A few seconds that changed everything

In 1997, Shane Varcoe was struck in the back of the leg by a forklift while working on the wharf. It nearly took his leg. It nearly took his life

In 1997, Shane Varcoe went to work on the wharf expecting an ordinary shift. A forklift hit him from behind and nearly took his leg off. Then things got worse. The injuries that followed almost killed him

It should never have happened

But that is exactly why the story matters

There was no dramatic villain. No single reckless decision that everyone could point to afterwards. There were shortcuts. Workarounds. Steps that had been skipped before without consequence. People were young, busy, trying to keep things moving, and getting away with it had started to feel the same as being safe

Until it wasn't

Shane survived, but survival was only the beginning. He underwent seven operations, had to learn to walk again and rebuild parts of his life most people never imagine losing

Today, he speaks about what happens before an incident becomes an incident

Because policies, procedures and audits can tell you what is supposed to happen. They cannot tell you what people have quietly allowed to become normal

Shane's message is not about ticking another safety box. It is about challenging leaders and frontline workers to look harder at the decisions, shortcuts and accepted behaviours that can eventually put someone in a hospital bed, or mean they never go home at all
